The purpose of this study is to suggest the extensive reading class byapplying qualitative research to extensive reading, i.e., to observe anddescribe the changes of English learners’ affective factors influenced byextensive reading and show the general attitude patterns at the end as itsresults. There have been a lot of studies on extensive reading, but theymainly examined extensive reading in terms of quantitative research. Ascompared to quantitative research, however, qualitative research has theadvantage of showing the changes in students’ attitude and behaviorpattern in depth that previous studies could not. To achieve this goal ofthe research, six Korean middle school second graders were interviewed, and their reading procedures were observed across 12 weeks. Qualitativeresearch methods, such as interview, observation, informal conversation,and reading journal, were used to collect data. The collected data wereanalyzed through transcribing, coding, and theme development. Theresults showed that middle school students changed in two ways: formingnew reading habits and having positive attitudes, through extensivereading. Also, it was observed that the role of the teacher was the key tothe success of extensive reading. The teacher should always consider thedifferent tendencies of individual students and be able to guide them toapproach to extensive reading appropriately.
