This paper aims at identifying the ideological orientation in the 1910s and arguing that the March 1st Movement (1919) was organized based on the ideological orientation. Controversial phrases in the Korean Independence Declaration such as "the high tide of reform in the world", "coexistence and co-prosperity of the world", "victimized by the policy of aggression and authoritarianism, the legacy of the past" and "it nerver aims at boycotting others" can be understood by tracing the ideological orientation in the 1910s. Furthermore, a quest for the ideological orientation will help elaborate on the post-movement ideology and culture. In particular, this paper sheds light on the history of thoughts in the 1910s by focusing on the reinterpretation of the evolution theory and the construction of human consciousness. In the process that the evolution theory of the 19th century was denied and the history of progress newly emerged, remarkable changes were made in the knowledge and thought in the 1910s such as debate over 'individuality', hope for 'reform' and interest in 'compassion' and 'love'. European and American writers such as Fichte, Nietzsche, Bergson, Marx, Tolstoi, Dostoevskii, Andreev, Baudelaire, Wordsworth and Longfellow started to be frequently quoted with the growth of the universalism and contemporariness. In the 1900s, the hierarchical order according to the power of nation existed in the world within the framework of the evolution theory and thus what was the most important was how to develop the nation a notch higher. However, in the 1910s there was a clear recognition that despite the power gap between nations 'the mankind' faced the same problem. At that time, the idea prevailed that even when we address issues regarding the nation, we should not fall into the ethnocentrism but deal with it from the perspective of 'the mankind'. March 1st Movement started by criticizing the law of jungle and finding 'the mankind' and 'the world', and intellectuals, students and religious figures took the lead in the March 1st Movement. The movement was developed into quite different ones with the temporal-spatial spread, but the origin-effect was valid even in its voluntary and violent development. The ideology manifested in the various "Declaration of Independence" represented the supreme value at that time and served as the foundation for seeking various political and social lines after the March 1st Movement. Several issues in the 1910s such as the discovery of individual, relations between the individual, the society and the nation, and between the individual, the world and the universe, and the balance between utopian ideal and the conflict in reality became the premise shared by the Nationalist and the Socialist and dominated the reality of Korea in the 20th century. That is why we need to turn our attention to the changes in the ideology and culture in the 1910s.
