Since liberation from Japan on August 15, 1945, the right-winger publicly criticized the leftists as they are interfering with unity among all korean by do not accepting the “spirit of the March 1st independence movement against Japan’s imperialism on 1919”. They urged that the March 1st independence movement is representing unification of korean peoples to achieve freedom and independence. On this point of view, the right-winger declared that all koreans should follow the “spirit of the March 1st independence movement”.
But the leftists refused to accept the right-winger’s view on the “spirit of the March 1st independence movement”. They claimed that the people demanded Japan colonial authority on 1919 by the March 1st independence movement to evacuate from korean peninsula and stop imperialist invasion. On this argument, they thought that the “spirit of the March 1st independence movement” is should be read as anti-imperialist movement.
Since Sungman Rhee’s government, the administration supported the right-winger's views on the March 1st independence movement. Under the Park Chung Hee dictatorship, the state textbooks contained the right-winger's views officially.
At that time the government took an anticommunist line hardly. Ideological conflict between the capitalist South and the communist was used to justify the Park’s dictatorship. For this reason, the government considered “spirit of the March 1st independence movement” as important means to promote anti-communism sentiment.
