This paper aims to explore the role of intertextuality in Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's Dictée. Dictée draws intertextual elements such as the myth, history and folklore related to minorities and arranges these elements in a strange and unfamiliar way. It also abruptly inserts images such as pictures and calligraphy without explanation and mixes genres from epic to poetry. Thus, the book seems distracting, ambiguous and inconsistent despite of the source's familiarity. This study first analyzes two main intertextual writing techniques, dictation and imitation, and examines the relationships between visual images and written texts. Lastly, this study focuses on the written texts which can be read as visual images. In conclusion, Dictée encourages readers to (re)consider the significance of the marginalized, showing the uniqueness of the individual through various intertextual techniques.
