The Buddhist painting discussed in this article was submitted for the exhibition Poesie der Farben Koreanische Kunst aus Schweizer Sammlungen held at the History and Ethnology Museum of St. Gallen, in Switzerland, for about nine months, from September 2, 2017, through June 10, 2018. Thankfully, it was possible to find some basic information about the painting because records of Buddhist painting(畵記) still remain intact and available. While gathering additional information after the exhibition was finished, I discovered several interesting facts about the artwork and the history of its production.
This Buddhist painting is a Hubuldo(後佛圖; Painting behind the Buddha Statue) that had been enshrined behind the Buddha statue of Suguam, a small temple that belongs to Bogwangsa(普光寺) in Paju. It was painted in 1891 mainly by Buddhist monk painter Byeoksan Yongha(碧山榕夏), who worked with Taeil(泰一). Further research revealed that this artwork was created alongside Sinjungdo(神衆圖) at Daeungbojeon(大雄寶殿), Bogwangsa, and Amitaseolbeoldo(阿彌陀說法圖) at Daebang(大房, currently Manseru) during the Manilhoe(萬日會) held at Bogwangsa in the same year, supposedly with the sponsorship of Sanggung(a court lady) Cheon. Bogwangsa received sponsorships from the royal palace and court ladies, and this painting is also supposedly one of those works which they had sponsored. Furthermore, while previous studies did not focus on Byeoksan Yongha, this study confirms the artistic relationship between Gosan Chukyeon(古山竺演), a famous modern-era Buddhist monk painter from Geumgangsan, based on their artworks and the available records, and also includes meaningful information about Buddhist monk painters who were active in Gangwon-do and the Geumgangsan region.
