The purpose of the study is to analyze how South Koreans perceive refugees through Yemenis who have entered Jeju Island. I analyzed comments from Naver News regarding Yemenis who entered Jeju Island through text-mapping techniques. The period to be analyzed was from June 1, 2016 to Jan. 30, 2019. They used ‘Jeju Refugee,’ ‘Yemen Refugee,’ ‘Jeong Woo-sung Refugee,’ and ‘Fake News of Refugees’ as search terms.
The collected comment data was pre-processed using KoNLPy, a Korean natural language processing package. Frequency analysis, Topics analysis, and Emotional analysis were performed.
The results of the analysis are as follows.
First, many South Koreans have a negative view of Yemenis who have entered Jeju Island en masse.
Second, there is a strong tendency to view the acts of Yemenis who collectively entered Jeju Island as a challenge to sacred sovereignty.
Third, as an agreement member of the Refugee Convention, the Korean government is also hoping negatively for the basic role it should play.
Fourth, they openly abhor those who offer a positive stance toward Yemenis entering Jeju Island, such as “Hangeolle”, “Kiregi” and “Munjoein” or criticize them through personal attacks, as seen by actor Jung Woo-sung.
Fifth, the emotional analysis of Yemenis entering Jeju was observed to have more negative comments than positive ones in quantitative terms as well as positive ones.
The study has limitations on looking at the overall Korean society`s perception of refugees that surrounds Yemenis entering Jeju Island.
However, it is meaningful in that the public has tried to establish the public`s perception of the “Refugees” issue, which has emerged as one of the important political agenda items in Korean society based on the Yemeni entry into Jeju Island, by analyzing comments through text-minning techniques.
