The postdramatic theater, which is influenced by postmodernism, displays various aspect of performances. Hans-Thies Lehmann, a German theater researcher, summarized 11 body styles depicted on postdramatic theater and these are of postdrama influence. The postdrama plays are centered around diverse body expressions, and amongst which Pina Bausch is the most prominent choreographer on the stage. She does not illustrate her gestures through dialogues in her performances, instead follows a phenomenological approach toward the gesture itself. “Kontakthof” is a work of hers that best explains the above statement. In the work, rational humans are depicted as fleshes of instincts, seducing and grading each other. In the stage where obligation of reproduction has been eliminated, the performance continues to convey meaning through gestures without uttering a word, portraying the criticism toward capitalism, the essence of human being, and the irrationality of language. It also reflects the imagery of a man faithful to instincts, not emotions.
In the postdramatic theater, body is the most intriguing material, and dance as an abstract form of language has proved itself capable of sufficing in delivering messages to the audience. Hence, an actor could exist as the actor himself, and the dance became the meaning through representation of the actor, and the actor could become the artistic subject himself.
