Rev. Sohn Yangwon (1902-1950) is one of the greatest Christian leaders of Korea. His greatness lay in his actions that matched his words. It would be rare to find someone who consistently practiced love of God and love of neighbor for all his life like him. The central principle that governed Rev. Sohn was the love for God and neighbor, more precisely, love of God, which flowed naturally into his love of neighbor. The purpose of this article is to examine the life of Rev. Sohn through his central principle. In his writings, love of God appears repeatedly, but love of one’s neighbor is hardly mentioned. He did not shout the slogan "Love your neighbor as yourself." Rather than shouting the words, he practiced it in his daily life, and lived it out all his life. His love of neighbors included love for Aeyangwon, his family, the people he met, his beloved colleagues who resisted the Shintoism against Japan, and the people who suffered under Japanese occupation. Today, in the conflict and confrontation between Honam(湖南) and Yeongnam(嶺南), Rev. Sohn is a role model of a true apostle of love who unites Honam and Yeongnam together. Having come from Yeongnam, his lifelong commitment and sacrificial love for the Honam people make him stand out as a true role model in this age deeply scarred by regionalism.
Aeyangwon was an ideal place for him to practice his love of God. Rev. Sohn Yangwon, who deeply loved and lived with those who were socially abandoned, marginalized among the marginalized ones who can not live a normal life, was certainly an apostle of love. He had a deep conviction that God had called him to care for the abandoned lepers with the love of God and courageously confront the Shinto Nationalism. Few people have practiced the love of Christ as much in the family and the church. He was accompanied by wonderful missionaries who could do the same, and elders such as Rev. Ki-chul Joo, whom he adored and admired, and Aeyangwon where the love of God and neighbor love could be put into practice. Rev. Sohn is too much like Jesus Christ who gave his life for us and loved his enemies, giving his life to save mankind. For him, love of God was not separated from love of neighbor; his love of neighbor flowed from his love of God, or Divine Love. Love of neighbor was never a motto, but a natural consequence of love of God. This was a rule of faith that he thought, believed, and was convinced of.
