Purpose: A important question about early word learning is whether word learning constraints such as mutual exclusive assume exist and foster early language acquisition. It is established that mutual exclusive assumption will map a new word to name-ignorant stimulus rather than a name-awareness stimulus. The purpose of this study will to see developmental aspect by age, focusing on mutual exclusive assumption. Also researcher going to observe age when children use the mutual exclusivity assumptions used to acquire new words more accurately. Methods: The subjects of the study included 103 children in total: 24 normal children at the age of 3, 22 normal children at the age of 4, 34 normal children at the age of 5 and 23 normal children at the age of 6. Experiment asked children to select one among 2 pictures(name-awareness stimulus, name-ignorant stimulus), when the children hearing a new non-word. Results: Name-ignorant stimulus was most frequently selected by the age of 3~6. Especially, when the child heard a new word from the 5-years-olds, children picked a name-ignorant stimulus rather than a name-awareness stimulus so as to show a statistically significant difference. Conclusions: Normal children at the age of 3~6 infer the meaning of new word by using mutual exclusive assumption. In the developmental aspect, we can see that mutual exclusivity assumptions are used at age 3 and become estabilished at age 5. The results of this study can be used as information about delayed word learning by comparing the use of mutual exclusivity assumptions through the mean and standard deviation of children aged 3 to 6 years.
