According to Hayek, in the market economy, social justice is practically impossible, morally unjustifiable and conceptually meaningless. Nonetheless, he argues that we are morally obligated to provide minimum security for the have-nots. Given the fact that those who have been advocating social justice, in general, tend to include in their programs various measure not only to reduce severe economic inequalities but also to garner resources for minimum social security. Hayek’s position is suspected of being incoherent. Isn’t it?
The aim of this article is to mainly show that Hayek’s position is coherent. To do so I will rely heavily on and make much use of J. J. Thomson’s conceptual analyses of justice and property right. However, I will also make a few arguments in support of Hayek’s claim that in the market economy traditional social justice policies are unjust and absurd. And in addition, I will insist that the minimum social security is not only justifiable in Hayek’s system of thoughts but also can be a viable option for the classical liberals who are often bounded by the absolutist conception of ownership in dealing with the problem of social justice.
