In 2016, from the tomb of Liu He(劉賀, the king of Chang Yi[昌邑王] Marquis of Haihun[海昏侯] of the Former Han dynasty period), more than 5 thousand bamboo strips including Analects, Classic of Rites(Liji) and I-Ching were newly found. Found among the Analects strips was the 『Qi Lun(齊論)』’s 「Zhi dao(知道)」chapter, which was previously believed to have been lost. This new find confirmed that the 『Jian Shui Jin Guan Han Strip(肩水金關漢簡)』 「73EJT22:6」 - earlier found from the West North region- was indeed 『Qi Lun』’s 「zhidao」 chapter. We can see that during the reigns of Emperors Xuan(宣) and Yuan(元) of the Former Han dynasty, 『Qi Lun』 was transmitted to various regions.
If examined with other Analects strips, such as the ‘Dingzhou(定州) bamboo strip Analects,’ which was recently excavated as well from the tomb of Liu xiu (劉修, King of Zhongshan Huai[中山懷王]) of the Former Han period, located at Hebei province(河北省)’s Dingzhou Bjiaolang (八角廊) village, as well as the so-called ‘Nangnang bamboo strip Analects,’ excavated from Tomb No.364 of the Pyeong’yang city(平壤市)’s Jeongbak-dong(貞柏洞) county, we can go beyond studying Analects with only books from a philosophical standpoint, and begin to understand Analects’s early formats, various publications of it and even the path of transmission displayed by early Confucianism. The Analects strip found from the Liu He tomb also confirms the previous belief that Confucian ideology was embraced by all classes of people -from powerful lords to even junior clerks- in the Former Han period, and circulated everywhere from the central capital to peripheries. Cross examined with Analects wooden strips found from ancient vestiges on the Korean peninsula, as well as written materials related to Korean ancient history, advanced understanding of Analects’s spread in ancient East Asian societies will be finally made possible.
