The characteristics of Joseon’s trade to Ming from the viewpoint of East-Asian Order in the 16th century, are as follows : First, unlike other tributary states which thought much of ‘public trade’ from the relation with Ming, Joseon was not greedy for gains from trade and observed ‘courtesy’ from the beginning of a dynasty. It enabled Joseon avoid the change even when the Ming Dynasty imposed tariffs on envoy trade of the tributary states and intensified the trade provisions in the late 15th century. The title, ‘the state with courtesy’ became the condition that Joseon made it possible to expand the trade to Ming in the 16th century. However, it, on the other hand, acted as a bond which made it difficult to expand the gain of trade indefinitely, in that Joseon should observe the feature as ‘the state with courtesy’.
Second, behind the splendid qualifier of East Asian ‘Era of Trade’ in the 16th century, there was tremendous hidden violence which had been committed under the guise of economic pursuit of profits. That’s the reason why Joseon was paid attention in that it was almost the only country of the growth of trade with maintaining the stable diplomatic relations with Ming in East Asia during the 16th century.
Third, Joseon was geographically adjacent to Ming on both land and sea, which meant that it amounts to unusual case of making it possible to have a trade with Ming on both land and sea among the East-Asian countries.
