The purpose of this study is to establish the concept of teacher questioning in class conversation, to clarify the types and functions of questioning, and the characteristics of teacher questioning.
The teachers’ questioning is based on the IRF structure of the classroom conversation. The teacher’s questioning can be defined as questioning sequences as teacher’s initial utterance for one topic, follow-up question as teacher’s feedback utterance according to the student’s answer, and series of subsequent questions.
The questioning sequences type can be classified into evaluation type, iteration type, enumeration type, materialization type, clarification type, expansion type, return type, and mixed type.
