This article examined if the area of poong-uh-gut of the west coast can be designated as an area of Korean shamanistic gut. It studied to find out whether poong-uh-gut of the west coast can be designated as an area as byul-shin-gut of the east coast is an area of Korean shamanistic gut. Poong-uh-gut exists as a traditional village gut that has been handed down from the past, but recently there has been several poong-uh-gut performances that were carried out mainly by National Federation of Fisheries Coorperatives. Such poong-uh-gut is like event gut and does not have fixed dates. It has the characteristics of being held in fish markets or makeshift stages. At the basis of poong-uh-gut of the west coast lies the economic basis of croaker hunting, the acceptance of the symbolic figure, General Kyung-up Lim, and the use of the same song, baechigi. Therefore, the west coast gut can have the common characteristics beyond the region. However, the structure and pattern of the gut are different and there are no common characteristics among the performers of gut, which can be a serious problem in setting the region. So we need to approach from a different angle. Several common aspects were found. First, they have specific measures for the changes in the fishery environment. Second, they reflect the change of the west coast. Third, they are not centered on fishermen but tourists who buy fish. Above all, poong-uh-gut of the west coast could be a unique area in that it was based on people’s response as the subject of folklore.
