This study set out to investigate the issues of community and others represented by accusations of Cheongsangsal and witch in the Byeongangsoiga pansori and The Witch webtoon. Both works tell the story of an individual being ousted by the community under the pretense of Cheongsangsal and witch accusations, and then being otherized. The study focused on the ways that The Witch, the X character, accepted and transformed the act of community victimhood, as raised in Byeongangsoiga in a modern way.
As both the works tell the story of a woman ousted by her community, this study analyzed the lives of Ongnyeo and Mi-jeong, with regard to the victim mechanism, and discussed their relations with the community(subject) and others. The discussion takes account of the community making others, the process of making others, and others attempting to escape community oppression and achieve coexistence and harmony. Further, the study examines the concept of community and presents insight on community coexisting with others and the formation of relations between community and others.
This work attempts to search for realistic alternatives through the issues of community and others in the two works. The minority groups that differed from mainstream society have been discriminated and alienated, when they enjoyed Byeongangsoiga, since the Joseon period. Driving these groups out to the margins of society has never been a solution in its true sense. The first step in solving the issue is to contemplate measures for the coexistence of community and others.
