Communalists maintain that the community should be an alternative to the future. But the problem is that their argument serves as a theoretical foundation for “uncritical community discourse” to make the members of society talk about the community without criticizing it.
The South Korean society actually has a venue of discourse to talk about the community in the value system of alternatives to the future. The core of this study involved identifying problems with uncritical community discourse and finding their alternatives.
There are a couple of issues deriving from uncritical community discourse: first, scholars and the public sharing this discourse tend to assume that the community “has collapsed” in today"s urban society; and secondly, it is an unreasonable argument that an advanced community with a combination of liberalism and communitarianism should be able to serve as an alternative to the future as it excludes various social issues derived from the community.
The present study proposed “awareness of overlapping nature among communities” and “setting of directing points” as alternatives to the former and latter, respectively. The former perceives an advanced community as a cultural phenomenon of accumulation layer after layer according to historical development, and the latter can be summarized as orientation toward a community of bright brain and pure nature.
