Diagnostic information of English learners can be beneficial for their learning, and cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) are gaining popularity as a means of obtaining diagnostic information. Among the CDMs, the deterministic inputs, noisy “and” gate (DINA) model is based on an assumption that the cognitive attributes are noncompensatory while the deterministic inputs, noisy “or” gate (DINO) model assumes the attributes are compensatory. The choice of CDMs is often made without evidence obtained from data. In this study, a test of reading comprehension (RC) was analyzed. The choice of the DINA or DINO model was made section by section, and goodness-of-fits were compared across the models. The best model was a mixed one with one DINA and two DINO models. Mastery probabilities for each attribute was also compared across the modeling choices. The results show some evidence that compensation of RC skills can be made depending on item types. This study also provides a cautionary note to the users of CDMs that if a wrong model is chosen, mastery probabilities of the students can be dramatically misleading.
