Jijunxiang(紀君祥)’s Yuan drama, Zhaoshiguer(趙氏孤兒) is counted as one of the Four Greatest Tragedies of China and Chinese are proud that it can sufficiently be compared to William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Zhaoshiguer is told that it’s avenger of so-called yixia(義俠) arousing human impression is well reflecting the Chinese values of Faith(義) and loyalty(忠) that Chinese highly regard. However, it is also a well known fact that the subject and some contents of the story were not Jijunxiang’s own but was based on a legend since Spring and Autumn period.
Similar to Romance of the Three Kingdoms(三國演義) that had been developing its contents mainly during Tang and Song periods, Zhaoshiguer had start revising its contents over a long period of time, including Zuozhuan (春秋左傳, Commentary on Spring and autumn annals by Zuo Qiuming) of Spring and autumn period, and Shiji(史記, Historical records) of Han dynasty. In particular, the basic plot of Zhaoshiguer was already formed at the stage of Shiji and was further developed after entering Qing dynasty. Missionaries of Society of Jesus had introduced Yuan drama Zhaoshiguer to Europe, especially where Voltaire in France had adapted the Zhaoshigue into his opera of The Orphan of Zhao(L’ Orphelin de la Chine.)
In this paper, ranging from Zuozhuan to The Orphan of Zhao, some issues including how the story of Zhaoshiguer had been developed and where the characters are in each period would be pursued.
