In this article I examine two types of ‘Snail Maiden-Overcoming Suffering Type.’ One is Type A which includes Yong-Nyeo’s repatriation episodes(용녀전승). The other is Type B which does not include those episodes.
In type A, a poor old bachelor marries Yong-Nyeo, who is a goddess. A powerful man takes the poor man’s wife by force. The wife, who is Yong-Nyeo, defeats the powerful man through her transcendental ability. In type A, the transcendental ability of Yong-Nyeo and Young Goong-the Sea palace- plays a direct role in solving problems.
In type B, a poor old bachelor marries Snail Maiden. A powerful man takes the poor man’s wife by force. In some versions, the wife, who was a snail formerly, defeats the powerful man through her transcendental ability or wisdom. In these cases the wife’s transcendental ability and prominent wisdom can be regarded as Yong-Nyeo’s transcendental ability.
In some versions of type B, the poor man himself defeats the powerful man through wearing powerful man’s robe or his own training. ‘Wearing powerful man’s robe’ expresses the irony of ‘the weak defeating the strong’. ‘Training’ means the poor man’s personal effort. In this type, the wife’s(snail maiden’s) transcendental ability and the husband’s(poor man’s) personal effort cooperate in solving problems. This kind of story can be said as the result of secularization of the type A.
