The Jungwon region encompasses areas of the Geumgang north of Baekdu-daegan and the upper reaches of the Namhangang water system. This study aims to examine archaeological evidences and ancient literature to provide the temporal and procedural frames of Shilla’s advancement to the region. It is indicated that Shilla paved its bridgehead ahead to acquire the Jungwon region by dominating travel routes while expanding to the northern Yeoungnam region including Sangju in the late 4thcentury.
In the northern Yeongnam region, stone chamber tombs constructed in the 5thcentury were found. Stone chamber tombs in the Hamchang and Sangju basins were built in different shapes and inferred with early Shilla style potteries depicting each local character. The relics of the Jungwon region in cluding the early Shilla style potteries and the stone chamber tombs confirm that Shilla was fully expanded to the region by the mid 5thcentury.
According to SamgukSagi(三國史記) that includes the recordings of the war with Baekje in the Isageum period, Shilla had interactions with the forces of the Geumgang area when they constructed fortresses after the Maripkan period. It is evidenced in the relics and fortress walls in the area. Shilla’s expansion to the Namhangang area appears as the acquisition of travel routes, which infers that the move was accomplished in a more stable and advanced position than Goguryeo. By securing its stronghold in the upper reaches of the Namhangang river in the 6thcentury, Shilla was able to eliminate the Goguryeo forces and acquire Danyang and Chungju to complete its expansion to the Jungwon region, which bestowed groundwork for the unification.
