Descartes"s generosity is worthy of notice in that it holds forth the possibility of the active toleration which is beyond the negative toleration and the tolerance as the ethics of the powerful. Descartes"s generosity typifies the secular virtue. Descartes chose the generosity based on freedom rather than a natural born magnanimity. He spotted the generosity as the virtue which is more than passion and as the key leading to all virtues. We can take it that the generosity is a match for rightful self-esteem. The pivotal point of generosity is freedom and self-esteem. This shows that his concept of generosity functions on the self-centered basis of one person. The generosity functions as the first principle of the secular morality based of self-consciousness and self cognition. In that respect, we can find that the generosity serves for a role telling us that we are the free agents of our activities. This can provide us with the important initial line suggesting the possibility of the education of tolerance.
