Yakcheon Nam Gu-Man was evaluated as a vassal representing the seventeenth century. Though the academic concern on Nam Gu-Man had increased, the study about his northern policy was not accomplished.Nam Gu-Man suggested a variety of opinions relevant to the operation of Northern Area during the period of King Hyeong Jong & Suk Jong’s reign. The most impressive one out of his insistencewas to request the establishment of the Four Abolished Gun & Hoo Joo Jin.
At that time,the Joseon Royal Court did not accept both the two Abolished Gun & Hoo Joo Jin. However, They came to establish more than three new military camps at the relevant area. Above all, it is confirmed that Nam Gu-Man’s appeal to northern frontier served as a momentum of discussing the operation of Joseon’s northern frontier & the recovery of Four Abolished Gun & Hoo Joo Jin Area.
His opinion had been always referred in the process of discussion related to the re-establishment of the Abolished Gun & Hoo Joo Jin Area until 18th century as well as during the period of Suk Jong’s reign. Therefore, we need to investigate his northern policy & awareness of territory for the purpose of deeply understanding the historical idea which the person, Nam Gu-Man had.
