Report Errors
The intensifying social polarization and inequality made the Korean society yearn for justice stronger than ever. The discussion of a welfare state raised its head in mid 2000s in response, yet the discussion was held in a dichotomy and oftentimes only focused on formulating fragmented policies and institutions. Achieving the distributive justice and a welfare state is closely connected to the fundamental philosophy of government management. Without a solid philosophical basis, there cannot exist substantial and stable plans for the future of the country.
For a theoretical foundation, this paper examines the distributive justice model of John Rawls, and reviews practical measures regarding how to apply the theory to Korean society. The attempt to reinterpret and apply the theory to modern South Korea can provide the much needed philosophical groundwork for the realization of distributive justice. This effort, involving the theory as well as the reality, will prove meaningful to the political arena in Korea as it seeks to find down-to-earth solutions. Through the endeavor and continued attempts to search for better means of fair distribution, the country will be able to move away from the ‘injustice’ and take a step forward to the ‘justice’.
