Chŏson society has suffered severe famines on two occasions since the outbreak of Imjin War in April, 1592. The first great famine lasted from the winter of 1592 till the summer of 1593, and the second from the autumn of 1593 till the spring of 1594. The great famines took a heavy toll of lives with a succession of food shortage, worsened immunity, rage of epidemics and deaths from hunger and illness. The second took the greater number of lives than the first, as the survivors from the first great famine did not have the energy to overcome the two-year-long famine. In particular, the outbreak of epidemics at the end of the second great famine has left a huge death toll.
The counties and prefectures along the Yŏngnam taero (Yŏngnam Road) in Kyŏngsang-do province, such as Sŏnsan and Indong, have lost 40 percent of their population during the two great famines (from the winter of 1592 till the spring of 1594), with almost same size of the population migrating to other regions. The social impacts of the Imjin War should be reviewed in a new perspective, as the war brought severe famines which led to heavy toll of lives and economic losses.
