Since the 1960s, the “Internal Development Theory” has always been at the crux of Korean historical studies, but nowadays the theory is facing challenges and is also being questioned. As a result it is not that well believed in, as much as it had been in the past, and with fading faith in the theory, Korean historical studies are also facing a crisis of their own. The question raised in this article is what should we do to cope with such challenge, and what should we do to revive Korean historical studies.
The decline of the ‘theory’ as well as problems in historical studies seem to be coinciding with each other, but the fundamental problem is that Korean historical studies have failed to transcend and reach excellence. Instead, they still lack ‘competitive edges.’ In the 1960s and ‘70s, historians considered the task of ‘getting over Colonial historical studies’ and by doing so recovering national pride as part of their sacred duty. In the 1980s, determined to make a contribution to democracy and social independence, historians tried hard to establish historical studies which were scientific in nature but could also be considered as a voice concerning issues of the time. Hence, Korean historical studies, determined to recreate and reconstruct Korean history (in which the Korean people supposedly developed themselves) in a progressive and independent fashion, in retrospect had a built-in flaw, which could be described as a teleological approach.
In a social atmosphere where everyone agreed with the notion that Korean historical studies should unite and strive for a common goal, such problems, as well as continual drop in academic supremacy, were never brought to people’s attention. But the society has changed, and while Korean historians no longer share such self-imposed mandate, the outside world lost interest in historical studies of the Korean peninsula too. As a result, suddenly all kinds of problems cropped up, with problems of the “Internal Development Theory” heavily discussed. In the future, we should face the reality and work hard to pursue excellence again and regain public faith.
