Character designates the set of lasting dispositions by which a person is recognized. Yeom Sang-Seob`s <Mansejeon> incarnates a character who are subject to the narrative space. The writer`s own thinking is embodied in the character. The name of character is Lee Inhwa. The work is constructed a story of Lee Inhwa, against conventions and toward modernity. We now turn from atmosphere or plot to character, studying <Mansejeon> of korean modern novels. We have discussed whether it could be taken out life and society, expecially colonial period. But we would be place the focus on the character, Lee Inhwa. who is a pattern of human being of modern times. The character has a history which it has contracted in the twofold sense, personal level and social context. Lee Inhwa is considered to have been a great man in the work. He have the personal identity which was articulated only in the temporal dimension of human existence. The self imply a form of consciousness of the intellectuals in colonial period. He denies the common heritage and shared spiritual orientation that is entirely derived from Confucian traditions. And he is always seeking after personality. As it is a kind of autobiographical retrospect narration, Lee Inhwa is the other self of the writer.
