This study is to analyze the difference of 'individual' in the Mansejeon(『萬歲前』), There is two categories of the 'individual' in this text; The one is 'abstract' and the another is 'concrete'. The first, the minimal unit of the society is opposite to a 'group'. The last is a social subject, that is a living man in the society, as the same meaning in the German Ideology of Marx,
Lee In-hwa, the hero, collides to the 'individuals' as the social subject, when he return to Korea, This subjects is not to be transcendental for him, thar is, he cannot unite them in one vision of historical view. Therefore he turns away his face from the reality of the society, and gives the superiority to the mentality as the self-examination.
The 'letter', in the first meaning, is the symbol of his dilemma in the narrative. Because, if he should accept the reality of the society, he gets fall down to hypocrisy in the end, That is, he should deny his existential ground himself. The 'letter', in the second meaning, is the suture of the narrative crisis and subject crisis of Lee In-hwa's. In the end, the narrative can be stably finished on behalf of this device: the letter.
