An effective physical education learning environment can give students the ability to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activities. Effectiveness of the learning environment is improved when students feel secure and cared for, according to Noddings (1992), who proposed a circle of care initiated by the teacher and completed by responses from the students. Although researchers have described caring teachers, there is little research to examine the diverse ways that students reciprocate. This ethnographic research examined characteristics of a positive and caring learning environment created by one physical education teacher. Data were collected from class observations, a written questionnaire (N = 69), and interviews with the teacher, Shannon, and 14 of her students to examine the learning environment. Qualitative analysis using open, axial, and selective coding, identified categories and themes. Findings showed that in Shannon’s relational and caring class environment, her students developed positive attitudes and values toward learning activities, expanding educational experiences, and sharing them with others, completing the circle of care. Implications from this study suggest the importance of Noddings` four teaching strategies and respecting the opinions and desires of each student as an individual in the dynamic contexts of the physical education class.
