This study explores the characteristics of John Cassavetes’ films in terms of methods and forms of narration. In narration, Cassavetes’ films do not use contextual indexes. Thus, his films deal with ‘design of film narration’ or ‘emotions of characters’ rather than allegory or symbols.
In terms of dramaturgy, John Cassavetes’ films aim at a little more poetic transformation than other films of the time. Nevertheless, he does not compress them or use metonymy. As a typical independent director out of giant studio systems, John Cassavetes established a new trend in American film. The tradition of ‘free films’ which made interpretation of various ways possible was created by him.
Modernist trend of Cassavetes’ films is distinguished from the trend of French Nouvelle Vague. Classical tradition or skeptical agony on classical philosophy which American films possessed disappears in his films. This study mentions Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese as the descendants of modernity who underwent same path as Cassavetes’ although their genres were different.
Cassavetes’ films took its place as another precedent in methods or techniques of film. In the relationship among hand-held shots, close-up shots and related montage shots, John Cassavetes’ films take opposite position against the concept of ‘spectacle’ and make themselves felt. His works do not prefer events which emphasize visual sights and they place more importance on direct delivery through senses and epidermis than local continuity.
In a completely separate position from the importance of linguistic symbols which the writers of Nouvelle Vague placed, Cassavetes displayed a new virtue of American independent films. He deserves to be given the credit of showing the history of creating yet another directing point toward which following writers can tread. It is not wrong for us to say that Cassavetes’ films are ‘films depicting surface’. Whole list of Cassavetes’ films clearly exhibits proud escape from symbolized trace and their modern jump.
