In most graphic design programmes, both elective subjects, such as design history and design management, and programme-specific subjects, such as photography and typography, are included. Educators generally teach design concepts and theories through lectures followed by studio practice. This conventional teaching style is more focussed pedagogy on developing students’ practical and theoretical skills. However, because the nature of design has been altered, practical and theoretical skills seem insufficient to equip students to meet the requirements of the rapidly changing design field. Studies in design education have investigated whether students would be more capable of creativity if design learning included emotional components. Therefore, the question is whether design programmes can be improved through a new paradigm shift rather than through theoretical and skill-based learning. Students may need to experience more emotional learning to enrich their design education as well as the vibrancy of their design outcomes. To generate this type of learning, active learning could be used to prompt students to actively engage in their learning activities and experience design concepts. In this paper, the effectiveness of active learning and its influence on enhancing the experience and learning motivation of design students is examined. Moreover, the method of modifying active learning with emotion is explored through the case study. This study also provides new teaching activities that include emotional components to facilitate student learning.
