This writing intends to define the concept of Byeolgok, a kind of an unrhymed verse based on the examples of the connected literature. The clue of the solution can be found in Sehosabal written by Heomok. He asserted that the first title Sehosa was changed into Seho-byeolgok because it was registered at Akbu. So this writing focused on tracing the meaning of its registration at Akbu. Such efforts could find out the following fact. When a work was assigned to the central and local government office called Akbu and it was entitled as the official song, the term of Byeolgok could be given.
Byeolgok was performed by gisaeng and professional musician who belonged to government official and it was the high class music which was enjoyed by the nobles. Also, Byeolgok was a creative piece which had one on one lyric with melody. Therefore, two concepts were contained in the term of Byeolgok, which was used for playing the music instrument as well as for singing the song.
When the age of Josun(Lee dynasties) began, no other new piece for the performance was made. As the result the concept of for playing instruments gradually fade. Byeolgok for singing had the long form mainly, which had set in. Regardless of the types, the term of Byeolgok as a byname of Jangga vs. Danga lasted to the end of Josun.
