The sentence ‘xue er shi xi zhi (to learn and practice from time to time)’ in the Analects of Confucius is an explicit expression on how knowledge is acquired through two behaviors of ‘xue( to learn)’ and ‘xi(to practice)’, which are different but closed related, and denote a lot more than the two-syllable compound word ‘xuexi(to learn)’ in modern Chinese language. ‘xue’ and ‘xi’ are frequently mentioned in the Analects of Confucius. ‘xue’ emphasizes the understanding and absorption of classics while ‘xi’ attaches importance to verification through practice. Therefore, ‘xuexi’ should mean to learn and practice. These two words are also strictly discriminated in other pre-Qin period classics. However, since the Han Dynasty, with the change of lexical structure of Chinese language happene dinsuch classicsas the Historical Records, the History of the Eastern Han, the History of Late Han Dynasty, the expression ‘xuexi’, which was composed of originally two monosyllable words with progressive interrelationship, has evolved into a two-syllable compound word with paralleling interrelationship, thus narrowed the meaning of ‘xuexi’. It is of great advantage to restore the original meaning of ‘xuexi’ for the revitalization of Chinese education and the construction of a learning-oriented society.
