Epidemic hemorrhagic fever was recognized for the first time in 1951 among United Nations troops, Since that time it has been known as Korean hemorrhagic fever (KHF) and has remained endemic near the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. In recent years it appears to have spread slowly in a southwesterly direction and 300 to 900 hospitalized cases are clinically diagnosed each year. In 1976 Lee and Lee succeeded in demonstrating an antigen in the lungs of the striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, which gave specific immunofluorescent reactions with sera from patients convaleszent from KHF for tke first time. In 1978 Lee et al reported that this antigen is the etiologic agent of KHF and proved that the reservoir of KHF in the endemic rural areas is Apodemas agrarius zoreae. There have been no report on production of specific antibodies to Hantaan virus, the etiologic agent of KHF, in experimental animals. This is the first successful results on production of antisera against Hantaan virus after inoculation af the virus into rabbit and guinea pig subcutaneously. 1. The immunofluorescent antibody response curve against Hantaan virus after inoculation of 1,000 Idso, 76/118 strain into rabbit was typical primary antibody response. The antibody was started to appear on 7th day after inoculation of the virus, reached maximum on 14th day and then declined slowly. Typical anamnestic antibody response was also demonstrated when booster dose of the virus was inoculated subcutaneously into immunized rabbits. 2. Typical primary antibody response curve was obtained in guinea pig after inoculation of Hantaan virus subcutaneously. The antibody was appeared on or about 2nd week after inoculation of the virus, reached maximum on 3rd week and then decreased slowly but remained detectable level up to 70 days.
