Korean hemorrnagic fever (KHF) was given a world-wide attention during the Korean war when about 3,000 KHF cases occurred for the first time in Korea among the UN troops, although some similar diseases had previously been reported from Russia, China and other areas of Europe. Recently in Korea several hundred patients were haspitalized annually due to KHF, and in China forty thousand people suffered from hemorrhagic fever, and man occurreces were reported also in Russia, Scandinavia and Japan. In 1967, Lee & Lee reported the isolation of Hantaan virus, the erioiogic agent of KHF, from the patients and .Apodemus agrarius coreae, and in 1978, Lee et al deveiopea the method of serological diagnosis of KHF. The working group on Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome at WHO meeting in Tokyo in 1982 recommended that diseases similar to KHF with different names should be referred as "Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS)." Yet there is na repon on the physico-chemical properties of Hantaan virus but with the Lee's fluorescent antibody technique, the study of the properties of Hantaan virus is possible. The effects of chemicals on Hantaan virus were examined for the first time with rissue cultured cells and Apodemus agrarius coreae. The results are summarized as follows: 1.The infectivity of Hantaan virus was contained in RNA component. 2. The lipid-solvents such as sodium deoxycholate, ether, chloroform, aceton and benzene rapidly destroyed the infectivity of Hantaan virus. 3. Chemical disinfectants such as ethanol, HC1, NaOH. & iodine solution easily destroyed the infectivity of Hantaan virus to the Apodemus agrarius.
