II Sam. 13:1-22 is a part of the long dynastic story which focuses on David and the demise of Absalom. In this story Tamar is introduced as an object, not as a subject. Her story begins with her relationship with her family who determines her destiny. She was raped by her half-bother Amnon, silenced by her brother Absalom, and ignored by her father David. However, Tamar by herself tried to maintain her identity and integrity under such devastations. Tamar`s story has not been read, preached, or studied in the church. Tamar`s story raises three critical issues to the faith community. First, II Sam. 13:1-22 is to be read as Tamar`s story, not as Absalom`s or any other`s. Tamar is the subject. She was a beautiful, wise, and caring woman. Before she was raped, she strongly resisted and tried to persuade the abuser. After being raped, she did not cover what happened. Instead, she cried out to the public even if nobody listened to and cared for her. Tamar was not only a victim but also a survivor. Second, Tamar`s story challenges us to think about who God is to her. God was not presented in Tamar`s story. Victims are confused by traditional images of God, such as King or father. They are suspicious of God’s love and power. Victims want to have different images of God with which they an communicate their anguish. Some images may include the abusive God to whom they may protest, the tender God to whom they feel close and friendly, and the vulnerable God to whom they feel suffering with. Third, Tamar`s story asks pastoral care providers about what they can do for her. For Tamar, trauma was a world-shattering experience. It was the violation of her integrity of body, mind, spirit, and relationships. It led to the loss of trust, faith, hope, joy, future, and meaning. Healing or recovery is a long and painful process of safety, remembering, mourning, reconstruction, and reconnection. Tamar’s story ends, but for her the ending is a beginning of a new and different life. Some day she will walk out of Absalom`s house to continue her own journey by herself. She will be making her own story, resisting to be a part of the dynastic story or his story.
