Young Keun KwonAll's Well that Ends Well is a play that deliberately toys with the convention of happy endings. It cheats expectation by having Bertram refuse to change his spots, which makes us become rather impatient of Helena's determination to have him. What prodigal ever prefaced his capitulation with an "if"? Considering the situation, Bertram's "if"(5. 3. 309-10) is to suggest the fragility of the lovers' reconciliation. Was ever the formulaic close, "And so they were married and lived happily ever after," treated with more ironic disdain? King's next "if"(5. 3. 321-2) is also so ironic disdain. But All's Well that Ends Well's ironic humor depends in part on our noticing that there is an extra source story, subverting the urbane straightforwardness of the Boccaccio tale which forms most of its plot. And this second source the biblical tale of Tamar, in which the happy ending depends on the bride's pretending to be a whore in order to seduce her father-in-law so that he will give her his third son as husband, after the first two who were already her husbands had died, is of such a horrendously complicated morality that All's Well that Ends Well is almost a lyrical love ballad in comparison. By juxtaposing Boccaccio's simple and civilized story with the unsentimental semi-barbarism of the biblical Tamar, Shakespeare created an uneasy hybrid of a play having the dubious morality of which critics are still debating. We have argued that this effect is deliberate. It comes from Shakespeare's playful attitude toward conventional moral and literary pieties. In other words, Shakespeare used his source material in a deliberately ironic way to question the accepted literary customs and conventional moral codes.
