In order to reveal some characteristics of Christian identities, four prominent methodologies in Christian counseling are analyzed. The methodologies are the narrative methodology, the pastoral diagnosis, Christian cognitive therapy, and spiritual direction. The narrative methodology finds its feature of Christian identity in its universality, that is, openness to non-Christian clients. It has been transferred from the beginning of the pastoral care movement formed among the mainline Protestant churches of U.S.A. in the late 19th century. The Christian identity of pastoral diagnosis methodology, lies in its recovery of Biblical or Christian theological concepts or theories. For the purpose of diagnosis and treatments in counseling, the methodology employs and interprets them. Any Biblical or Christian theological concepts or theories that have no relevance to modern therapeutic theories, in this methodology, are omitted or interpreted psychologically. The Christian cognitive therapy lay its Christian identity in its Biblical or Christian theological contents of the beliefs. Clients` unconscious beliefs or automatic thoughts are to be analyzed and assessed. Its criteria with which they are diagnosed and with which their pathogenic features are challenged, are derived from the Bible or Christian theological theories. The Christian identity of the spiritual direction methodology is found in the features of clients` relationships. Their relationships with God matter in the process of Christian counseling. Moreover, the relationships are considered to be the primary constitution. Their relationships with counselors work as a preliminary or instrumental process toward recoveries and growths in their relationships with God.
