Human being cannot escape from evil and suffering as long as he lives in this world. The only thing he can do is to find some ways to overcome it somehow. We can see many kinds of efforts for resolving such problems from the myths and various rites of religions. An analytical psychologist C. G. Jung analyzed the problem of evil in human life. According to Jung, evil is rooted in the dark side of personality, which he called "the shadow" : "The shadow is the unknown side of the personality, and it normally encounters the ego which is the center and representative of the light side and of consciousness, in the form of a dark, uncanny figure of evil." What is important, with respect to the shadow, is to be conscious of various representations of shadow in our lives and to integrate them. Otherwise, we are to be possessed by it. We can see the efforts to confront and to integrate the shadow side of personality in Heungboo-Chun, a Korean ancient novel. The hero Heungboo and his brother Nolboo, from psychological point of view, are not two seperate man but symbolize the two sides of the personality of a human being. In other words, Nolboo represents the shadow side of Heungboo who tried to identify himself with the goodness, while repressing his dark side. Heungboo suffered much because of poverty, which presents libido deficit. At first, he could not accept his problem and tried to flee from it. But he, after all, accepted it. And he cured the broken leg of a swallow and, as a reward, received the seed of gourd. In the end, he became rich due to the huge amount of jewerly contained ip the gourd. Finally, Heungboo accepted his bad brother Nolboo who became poor as a result of breaking the leg of a swallow. This story shows us a way to overcome evil in this life: the way of confrontation and integration of the shadow side of personality. Heungboo did not supress but accept the dark side of his personality. In this way he reached at a more advanced level of life. This story reveals that our ancesters regarded accepting and reconciling the shadow of personality as a good way to transform their personality.
