This thesis deals with the spectrum of 'evil' in Park, Kyong-Ni's novel,『Toji( 土地)』in the sense of 'natural evil' and 'moral evil.'
'Natural Evil' in『Toji』is used as a secondary tool to reinforce the characters' 'moral evil' by accusing personal and/or collective greed, rather than a metaphysical device to rationalize the fate or the god's good will. Similar to the most of the contemporary arguments of the evil,『Toji』focuses on the moral evil. Immanuel Kant believed the moral evil begins from the individual free-will, and categorized human natute into weakness, impurity, and wickedness. This thesis also follows Kant's classificationof the evil. According to this classification,『Toji』refuses simple schema of good and evil and describes the causes and consequences of the 'evil acts' in detail.
When the Choi family collapses and Choi, Seo-Hee and the community members revenge Jo, Jun-Gu for economical and psychological damages, the narrator does not show any sympathy. This shows fundamental characteristics of『Toji』's narrative that evil acts.
should not be allowed even for a disciplinary purpose of other evil acts.
