Acclaimed by some and dismissed as sectarian by others, Stanley Hauerwas continues to command attention and to generate controversy. This writer believes that, regardless of any future contributions by Hauerwas, he has already performed a tremendous service in the field of christian ethics by creating renewed interest and debates concerning narrative methodology, the virtues, and an ethics of character. Although he does not care for the designation "provocative", Hauerwas` greatest contribution may he his gift for stimulating thinking and writing. With a writing style which is at its best insightful and challenging, and at its worst confusing and obscure, Hauerwas nonetheless manages to call the contemporary church and individual christians to reflect and evaluate the relationship between beliefs, character, and actions. The purpose of this article is to analyze the foci of Hauerwas` theological thoughts and his ethical methodology. For Hauerwas, what christian ethics is called, first of all, could be considered as the actualizing process of cardinal vision or image of Human through development of his virtue. The most important contribution of Hauerwas` approach also functions as a powerful motivator for his work: the revealed inadequacy of an ethic based upon decisionism. Decisionism(also referred to as occasionalism, situationalism, or quandary ethics) assumes that ethics is the process of selecting the correct solution as one faces difficult situations. Moral rationality is limited to choices between various courses of action. Objecting to the basis of decisionism, Hauerwas bluntly states: the moral life does not consist just in making one right decision after another, but it is the progressive attempt to widen and clarify our vision of reality. Hauerwas argues that it is only an ethics of character displayed through a narrative that provides the context necessary to pose the terms of a decision, or to determine whether a decision should be made at all. Hauerwas seeks to make is that while it is erroneous to construct an ethical system which places the emphasis on the right or wrong of individual decisions, an ethics of character does depend upon an agent who makes a series of decisions which are character-shaping, guided by right intentions. The important issues of agency, community, intentionality, and virtue, in addition to the recovery of narrative as a methodology, have all experienced a significant resurgence in discussions of morality and ethics as a result of the contemporary emphasis on character ethics. Christian had been configured by the narratives and metaphor orientating one`s variety of self-development. Narrative is more than simply telling stories. For Hauerwas, narrative is essential to self-understanding, critical for revealing character, and the means by which one becomes part of the Christian community. The Christian narrative is the ultimate adventure story, as it invites us to contribute to God`s kingdom through our living faithful to it. Only such a story could have the power to break our fatal self-absorption and fascination by directing our attention to how marvelously the Lord of the universe has grasped our attention through the cross and resurrection of Christ. Narrative stands as an important methodology for Christian theology and ethics
