This paper is a Christian ethical study on the ‘social spirituality’ based on discipleship. The main points of this paper are as follows: (1) Christian social spirituality is contained in the biblical discipleship. And (2) Christian social spirituality should be connected to the ethics for reforming the church.
In this context, this article examines the discipleship of Stanley Hauerwas, and suggests social spirituality as an essential element of ‘being church.’ Hauerwas regards discipleship as ‘being witness of the gospel’ and emphasizes it as the basis for being church. He does not reduce ‘witness of the gospel’ to privatized sphere but extends to ‘social witness of the gospel.’
Of course, Hauerwas has some limits. For example, he is not free from criticism of sectarian withdrawal. And his concern of social spirituality has to be supplement for becoming a community of ‘good Samaritans.’ Nevertheless, Hauerwas gives important insights to reform the church. Most of all, Korean church should overcome the gospel of prosperity and pursue the social spirituality.

이 글은 제자도에 근거한 ‘사회적 영성’을 모색하는 기독교윤리학적 성찰로서, 다음 두 가지에 초점을 맞춘다. (1) 사회적 영성은 한국교회가 반드시 구현해야 할 가치로서, 사회적 영성의 근거들 중에서 ‘제자도’에 관심해야 한다. 그리고 (2) 사회적 영성을 ‘교회 넘어서기’로 다루는 경향을 보완하기 위하여, 제자도에 근거한 사회적 영성을 모색하고 ‘교회개혁’의 관점에서 접근해야 한다.
이러한 맥락에서, 이 글은 ‘교회됨’을 강조한 하우어워스의 제자도를 살펴보았다. 사회적 영성을 ‘교회개혁’의 필수요소로 제안하려는 취지이다. 하우어워스는 제자도를 ‘복음의 증인됨’으로 인식하고 교회됨을 위한 근간이라고 주장한다. 하우어워스에게서 복음의 증인됨은 개인의 영역에 사사화되지 않고 ‘복음의 사회적 증인됨’으로 확장된다. 하우어워스를 통하여, 사회적 영성을 교회개혁의 관점에서 다룰 필요성을 확인할 수 있으며 제자도에 근거한 사회적 영성의 모색에 힘써야 한다는 사실 또한 확인할 수 있다.
하우어워스의 관점은 소종파적 퇴거의 위험을 지닌다는 비판에서 자유롭지 못하며 공감의 윤리를 위한 ‘선한 사마리아인’의 공동체가 되어야 한다는 점을 보완해야 할 한계를 지니고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 그가 제자도에 근거한 사회적 영성을 모색한 것 자체는 바르게 평가되어야 한다. 제자도에 대한 하우어워스의 관점은 한국교회에 중요한 함의를 준다. 제자도를 도구화하면서 번영신학에 휩쓸리고 있는 한국교회는 제자도에 근거한 사회적 영성의 모색을 통해 교회됨에 나서야 한다.
