The purpose of this article is to gain laywomen"s real membership in the Jogae Order of Korea Buddhism and to recover gender-equality in the Buddha"s teachings. While the Buddhist doctrine itself fundamentally teaches an equality among bhikku, bhikkuni, laymen, laywomen, the law of the Order puts a limit on the participation of laywomen in its management and further marginalizes laywomen. As a result, the law has functioned as a tool of justifying discrimination and oppression to laywomen throughout the history of the Order’s development.
Recently, laywomen attempted to overcome the patriarchal ideology within the Order and asked to amend the hierarchial law of the Order. This is due to the laywomen"s heightened consciousness toward gender equality and bhikkuni"s participation movement. Survey results show that lots of buddhists admitted the current gender discrimination in the Order. They understood that the absence of women leaders in several organizations associated with the Order is due to gender discrimination. Furthermore, most of lay women take charge of cooking and cleaning in temples while laymen generally assist with temple events. It means that genderdiscriminatory customs have effected patterns of lay persons" religious practices From the viewpoint of feminism, a post-dualistic way of thought based on the Buddha’s teachings is required in order to apply the Buddha’s doctrine of equality and liberation to the Jogae Order of Korea Buddhism. Also, the discriminative law of the Order should be amended, and a gender-partnership based on communication and collaboration, in lieu of confrontation and conflicts, is more vital between bhikkus and bhikkunis, laymen and laywomen,
