This article investigates the characteristics including parts of speech, word formation, and branch of meanings of the “Hybrid words” in “Taiheiki.”
First, there are 1626 hybrid words in “Taiheiki,” which account for 4.6% of the total vocabulary. When these words are classified by parts of speech, the order of appearance frequency is “verb＞noun＞na-adjective＞adverb＞i-adjective,” and the number of verbs is overwhelming. These are thought to be the result of Chinese words that were used as verbs combining easily with the nominal verb “su” in the process of the assimilation of Chinese words into Japanese.
Second, when the formation of the hybrid words is sorted by parts of speech, “Japanese words of Chinese origin + words of Japanese origin” and “words of Japanese origin + Japanese words of Chinese origin” comprise most of the nouns. In the case of verbs, the number of “Japanese words of Chinese origin-nominal verb” is overwhelming. In the case of i-adjective, form of Japanese words of Chinese origin noun + nashi is often found, and nikushi, gatashi, yasushi and so on are combined with Japanese words of Chinese origin-nominal verb. In the case of na-adjective, words of “Japanese loanwords of Chinese origin + nari” and “Japanese loanwords of Chinese origin + tari” are often found. As a result of semantic classification of the nouns in the hybrid words based on “Bunruigoihyou,” many belong to “the main constituent of human activities.”
Finally, from the viewpoint of vocabulary (as a result of having tried a semantic classification from four classifications of the verb by Haruhiko Kindaichi), the verbs in hybrid words are often used as “verbs of the momentary movement.”
