The purpose of this study was to explore the middle verb constructions and the psychological verb constructions in English. In this study, I first identified verbs that could be middle verbs. Next, I examined whether or not the psychological verb constructions can be the middle verb constructions, and made an attempt to explicate characteristics of psychological verbs that cannot be middle verbs. The attempt was motivated by my understanding that there are many similarities between middle verbs and psychological verbs. For the purpose, I applied the constraints of the formation of the middle verb constructions to the psychological verb constructions in order to review the formation of the middle verb constructions of the psychological verbs. Some constraints are very useful to explain them but others are not useful enough to do so. The middle verb constructions are derived from the corresponding transitive verb constructions. Amuse and admire type psychological verbs are transitive verbs and marvel and appeal type psychological verbs are intransitive verbs. I explained in depth why some verbs can be middle verbs and others cannot in this study.
