The purpose of this study aimed to investigate writing activities in English textbooks, Highschool English I in terms of achievement criteria and topics presented in the Curriculum, and discuss emerging issues relating to students" practical English writing skills throughout this analysis. To achieve this purpose, it carried out a textbook analysis about the type and genre of the writing activities in English textbooks. The results of this study indicate that writing activities presented in Highschool English I meet the achievement criteria in the national curriculum except in some cases where textbooks do not reflect every item of the achievement criteria evenly. Second, the findings show that the topics comply with the curriculum topics in general. Lastly, although High School English I includes different genres of writing activities, there was a limit as to what the students could do when developing their writing skills for specific goals. Based on these results above, this study attempted to make suggestions and implications for the effective English writing instructions in the practical classroom.
