In Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason Kant held that human beings, as a species, are evil. But the text of Religion is convoluted and difficult, with inadequate exposition of central concepts and confusing articulation of important claims. For this reason it is generally said that Kant did not or could not justify his claim of universal evil at all. Furthermore the concept of radical evil outlined there is inconsistent. Unlike the critics, however, I will be attempting to provide a reconstruction of Kant’s argument for the claim of universal evil using the text as a basis and propose a way explaining how the contradictory positions on the concept of the radical evil could be understood properly.
