??Lawrence and Roethke are the pre-eminent prophet of spiritual resurrection, proclaiming return to the physical, the consciousness of the body, the primitive and instinctive as the way to recapture vitality and escape the prison of a mechanized commercial society. Lawrence’s and Roethke’s nature poetry are the same exact observation combined with intuitive and passionate identification; For Roethke, as for Lawrence, nothing?a snake, a bat, a mouse, a slug, a towhee?is too small to be noticed, nothing is unworthy or significant. They avoid scenes of Romantic grandeur to focus instead on the near and common; they reach out to the natural life around them.
??In their later nature poetry, there are similar probing of the unconscious, the dark springs of human nature. Both poets are looking into the abyss, as though sensing that the end is near, and both find cause for celebration as they achieve, in the knowledge of fast-approaching death, wholeness at last. It is symbolized by a journey to go down to the underworld, the world of death, and return to earth. In this process they purpose to achieve a whole consciousness, balancing both soul and body.
