A Study on Death in AmoresYoung-Ok Jeon (Namseoul U)This paper attempts to demonstrate how Lawrence overcame the death of his mother and his illness and how he started new life in Amores. In Amores, death shakes Lawrence out of boyhood to face the future. The unbearably recurrent sorrow caused by his mother's death remains constant to him, but his impulse to move forward makes headway against grief and end. Lawrence visibly comes to grasp how to deal with death in confrontation with it, and he emerges from the struggle with unimpaired integrity and stronger faith in life.Lawrence projects, evaluates and orders his own experience in his poems. Thereby he gives meanings to the world of his own experience. Amores as the autobiography of Lawrence's emotional and inner life performs at least three functions: recording personal crises, creating fictions of transcendence, and shaking the audience by challenging and reforming received wisdom. That is, this is neither an accurate autobiography nor a practical philosophy. Lawrence creates instead an art in which he redefines and extends himself, not to convert others, but to awake their instinct for conflict. Lawrence finds the knowledge of darkness through his crises. Darkness is a passageway to the unknown and a new life. And it is the womb of all life. The images of death and the unknown such as the sea of darkness, dolphins, blue flowers and rainbow in Amores find their places in the latter poems with much greater coherence and power.
