Abstract Green and Ecological Philosophy in D. H. Lawrence Sang-Moon Huh (Yeungnam U) We live in an age of ecological imagination as a result of the overwhelming development of industry and technology, which has been persisting for past centuries. In the process of industrialization, nature is considered to be a means to achieve the maximum level of production--to be exploited without having its own intrinsic value. Many ecologists are concerned with the origin of the present global ecological crisis, the most effective method to overcome it, and alternative forms of society. They object to the exploitation of nature by humans, suggesting that the prevailing social value of anthropocentrism is the origin of the crisis. By ecology, we mean the body of knowledge concerning the economy of nature--the investigation of the total relations of the animal both to its inorganic and to its organic environment: above all, its friendly and inimical relations with those animals and plants with which it comes directly or indirectly into contact. Recent developments in ecological and environmental thinking have provided us with an opportunity to read D. H. Lawrence's literary works from a new perspective. In spite of the critics who consider that nature in Lawrence’s works is not an end in itself but a means to reach something beyond, we should take into account the fact that Lawrence considered nature a living entity. In his works, nature and human beings have a very intimate relationship and are not alienated from each other. In his view, nature is always in the process of creation. To Lawrence, therefore, it is unthinkable to separate man from nature. As we look into the ecological consciousness and Green thinking in Lawrence’s literary works, it seems clear that he tries to reconcile the ecological problems that result from the ruling and ruled relationships of these days by grasping the relationship of human and nature as the equal thing of brotherliness.
