The purpose of this study is to consider who is the real leader for founding new world in Lawrence’s leadership poems. Lawrence thought the transformation of the devastated and corrupt western world into new world results not from political ideology and social systems but from self-fulfillment of individuals. Lawrence thought the western civilization, mechanized and materialized, came from losing balance of our consciousness. In his leadership poems, he is becoming a revolutionary who has whole consciousness balancing the binary elements within his conceptual schema. In the Lawrence’s leadership poems, the revolutionary poet as the “enemy of convention” who “makes a slit in the umbrella”of our conventional schemata is to open “a window to the sun”for the reader and to break down old conceptual framework within mechanistic paradigm, light vs. dark, touching vs. seeing, thinking vs. feeling, and life vs. death. The journey traced by these leadership poems is the one actually taken by Lawrence, beginning in Italy and ending in New Mexico is metaphorically from the light into the inner darkness. Lawrence thought the knowledge of darkness was the unknown because the western civilization has privileged the “light”above the “dark.” He focuses on the dark side tentatively in these poem to balance the two sides. For Lawrence, the greatest evil of the mechanistic paradigm is that it insulates human beings from recognizing the vivid relatedness between themselves and the remainder of the universe. Lawrence thought his vital role as a revolutionary is to urge his readers to recover their whole consciousness and live creative life by harmonizing with the universe. At this time he believed the new world would be realized.
